The Twenty-Four Interlacements of Edo Yatsu Gumi

The Twenty-Four Interlacements of Edo Yatsu Gumi

by Rosalie Neilson

The Twenty-Four Interlacements of Edo Yatsu Gumi is a companion book to the previously published kumihimo design book The Thirty-Seven Interlacements of Hira Kara Gumi. The book is limited to a printing of 500 copies, numbered and signed by the author. The book features folded pages and a printed cover replicating a stitched binding. It measures approximately 4¾ inches by 6¾ inches. The book illustrates the 24 different 2-color placements of braiding elements to achieve the 24 definitive designs of Edo Yatsu Gumi, an 8-strand round kumihimo braid. The book documents the unique braid designs using one element A and seven elements B, two elements A and six elements B, three elements A and five elements B, and finally four elements A and four elements B. The color placement for each braid is shown on a circle representing the Marudai braiding stand. The braid is illustrated with a front and back view, in addition to a flattened version, as if the braid had been cut in half vertically. Instructions for creating Edo Yatsu Gumi are included as is a template of the braid to aid further exploration in multi-colored braids. Braiders may want to explore the idea of substituting two different weight elements in place of the colors for even more unique designs, or applying the color layout in pairs to their favorite 16-element braid.
